The Arc NLC and The Arc QV are independent, affiliated chapters of The Arc of the The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation has awarded The Arc New London County $4,875 to help develop an irrigation system for its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.
The Arc NLC started a CSA pilot program in 2016 as part of its Farm Stand and aquaponics micro-enterprise on Rt. 117 in Ledyard, which provides on-the-job training in agriculture/horticulture, retail sales, and customer service to men and women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). “This race has developed such a strong following and become a favorite family event for New London County,” said Members of The Arc New London County’s Employment Transition Center continue to expand their job skills—this week receiving customer service training while taking on The Resident’s downtown New London delivery route. The Resident team, including Publisher Ann, provided a warm welcome and brief training at the Resident’s offices in Norwich, CT – The Arc New London County received $25,525 from the Connecticut Health & Educational Facilities Authority at its Nonprofit Grant Awards Presentation on June 27th in Hartford.
The grant, which will fund exterior masonry repairs and the installation of a new ADA-compliant entrance door at its main offices on Sachem Street in Norwich, was part of $1,048,238 that CHEFA’s Board of Directors approved to award qualifying nonprofit agencies throughout Connecticut in 2018.

The holidays can be a difficult time for adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, many of whom live on fixed incomes and have little money for special holiday foods, winter clothes, or presents. But thanks to the incredible generosity of the southeastern Connecticut community, participants of The Arc NLC’s community programs and residents of some 14 community homes were treated to an extraordinarily generous outpouring of gifts, warm apparel, and gift The Arc New London County’s Community Life & Advocacy component received a $4,920 from the Southeast Area Women and Girls Fund, sponsored by the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut and the Baker Costa Mallette Fund.
The grant will support the “Voices” program for women with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are survivors or at risk of domestic violence and/or sexual abuse. A combination of classroom activities, group sessions, and team building exercises helps students learn critical transition skills, improve communication skills, and advocate for themselves and their peers in Norwich, CT – The Chelsea Groton Foundation has awarded $960 to The Arc NLC’s Individualized Home Supports (IHS) program, which provides a variety of support services to families living with loved ones with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout southeastern Connecticut and beyond. The program also operates a Life Skills Center at the agency’s Norwich facility, and the Chelsea Groton Foundation’s grant will allow the program to purchase weighted blankets and vests for participants with Norwich, CT – The Savings Institute Foundation has awarded $3,000 to The Arc New London County to help support empowerment/enrichment groups and activities provided by the Community Life & Advocacy program serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).
The empowerment/enrichment groups are key to introducing participants to the concept of viewing themselves as part of a broader community in which they have a voice, an interest, and a right of inclusion. They include self-advocacy, Norwich, CT – The Builders and Remodelers Association of Eastern Connecticut raised $1,744 on behalf of The Arc New London County at its November 25th “Denim and Diamonds” annual gala and fundraiser. Named BAEC’s charity of the year, The Arc NLC provides day and residential services to over 620 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families in Southeastern Connecticut. The Association’s generous donation will support critical programs including The Arc’s Employment Norwich, CT – Six women with Intellectual Disabilities who through the years have come to identify as family will now have a stove large enough to cook a holiday turkey thanks to Lowe’s Home Improvement in Waterford.
Several decades of living in a community home operated by The Arc New London County led to the women’s wish to invite family members into their own home to host holiday festivities together. But the 1950s-era kitchen provided obstacles to the number of people hosted due to the small size of a Norwich, CT – The Rotary Club of Niantic has awarded $500 to The Arc New London County to help support one of its Empowerment/Enrichment programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
“Elements of Ellen” is offered through The Arc’s Community Life and Advocacy component and is designed to help men and women develop confidence, poise and public speaking skills in order to attend classes, work or volunteer in the community.
The 16-week curriculum, offered three times per year, gives Norwich, CT – People’s United Community Foundation has awarded $4,000 to The Arc New London County’s Community Life and Advocacy program in support of critical inclusion programming for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Due to segregation in schools and society, people with IDD traditionally have been denied a host of basic opportunities and activities the rest of us take for granted. Thanks to People’s United Community Foundation, key issues of concern for people with IDD and Norwich, CT – The Dime Bank Foundation has awarded $1,536.00 to The Arc New London County to help provide transportation for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) who are attending The Arc’s digital literacy training course.
The repeating 8-week course is funded by a grant from Comcast and teaches participants and their caregivers how to use the iPad’s many apps for daily living, communication, and support for people with limited or no verbal abilities. The course also places Norwich, CT – The Arc New London County was awarded $3,235, raised by Comcast/NBCUniversal employees as part of last Spring’s national Comcast Cares Day. The Arc had been selected as the regional site for the annual event, in which Comcast employees volunteer at a non-profit agency and complete a variety of projects. Comcast purchased materials and supplied volunteers, who worked with the Arc’s 15 participant volunteers to paint interior walls and plant gardens around the Sachem Street facility in Norwich, CT – Chelsea Groton Foundation awarded $1,000 to The Arc New London County for the purchase of a Troy-Bilt Horse Garden Tiller to support The Arc Farmstand and community agriculture project in Ledyard.
The Arc Farmstand provides on-the-job vocational training for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in the areas of retail, farming and distribution.
